Did You Read the Warning?

In a recent sermon, I shared some of the more funny warning labels that are on products. For example, on Duraflame logs, there is a warning that says, “Caution—Risk of Fire.” It may sound funny, but there must be a reason why it is there. What about the more serious warnings that we are given? We are told that driving and texting can be deadly, yet I see people everyday doing it.  It has been proven that smoking can be hazardous to one’s health, but regardless of the warnings, people still smoke. Why don’t we listen to the warnings? When it comes to your spiritual walk, “did you read the warning”?

In 2 Chronicles 24:20 it states, “20 Then the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, who stood above the people, and said to them, “Thus says God: ‘Why do you transgress the commandments of the Lord, so that you cannot prosper? Because you have forsaken the Lord, He also has forsaken you.’”

Yes, the Lord has given us a “warning label” and it is called the Bible. Have you read the warning? Are you following the warning? Just like the warnings on products, God’s “warning” is to protect us and provide us an eternity of peace and joy with Jesus.

There is a natural tendency for people to hide things. More and more, we talk about “transparency” and “being real”, yet it seems that more and more we hide things from people. This may work for a while but, eventually, things do get revealed. Even though we see others around us have their sins “revealed” we fool ourselves into thinking that “we will be different, no one will ever know”. No matter how hard we try, did you know that all of our sins have already been revealed?

In 1 Timothy 5:24-25 we read, “24 The sins of some are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them. 25 In the same way, good deeds are obvious, and even those that are not obvious cannot remain hidden forever.”

Because God is all knowing, He is also all seeing. The only way that He will forget our sins is if we repent and turn away from our sins.  If our sins are going to be discovered anyway, why not get rid of them now so that we won’t have to worry about them later?

Now What?

I think that in society, people has a tendency to look for “immediate results” without thinking through the consequences of our actions and decisions. People will do “what feels good”, “what makes me popular”, “what my friends/family are doing”. Unfortunately, when we make decisions like that, we are not looking into the future when those decisions/actions turn out to be bad for us. As we begin to suffer, there is a general thought of “I wish I would have not done that”. Well, the same can be said for our spiritual walks.

In Mark 6:36 Mark writes, “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?”

Yes, there are many things that we can do that will “profit” us here on earth, but what will they do for our soul?

Is It Time to Remodel Your Home?

Is it time to remodel your home?

The Christian Home – Colossians 3:18-25

18 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them.20 Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord.21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.22 Bondservants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in sincerity of heart, fearing God. 23 And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for[a] you serve the Lord Christ. 25 But he who does wrong will be repaid for what he has done, and there is no partiality.

What Does a Real Man Look Like?

What does a real man look like? Well based upon society, it is either a cowboy that smokes a certain cigarette while he rides his horse, or someone that fly around the world in their private jet finalizing big business deals.  But, what does a real man look like to the Lord.

Character of the New Man – Colossians 3:12-17

12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do. 14 But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. 15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

Choose today to be the man that God wants you to be, the man your family needs you to be.

Strive for the Job You Want, Not the Job You Have

When I was in the business world, I followed a simple theory in my career — “work for the job you want, not for the job you have”. The concept was simple. Each day, I made sure I was doing things, saying things, producing results that would get me the next promotion, not keep me in my current position. I discovered that if I had my eyes fixed on the next title, next office, next paycheck, it was easier to obtain. The “bad days at work” were easier to accept if I believed that another job, bigger job was out there for me. Did you know that this we should apply this same theory to our spiritual lives?

In Colossians 3:1-4 Paul writes, “If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.”

We should not live our lives for the life we have now, but the life we want to have in Heaven. Strive for a life in Heaven, not a life here on earth.

Are You a Man of God?

It is one thing to say we are a Christian, but it is something entirely different to “be a Christian”.  Regardless of what we are saying, our actions will always prove to be louder that our words. I may say that I workout at the gym, but if I never actually go into the gym, people won’t believe what I am saying. The same can be said for our walk. As people look at you, “are you a man of God”?

In 1 King 17:24 it states, “24 Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now by this I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is the truth.”

The widow knew that Elijah was a man of God, not by his words, but by his actions. As people look at you, “are you a man of God” or are your actions telling them something different?

Is God Providing for You?

It is safe to say that most people go through seasons in the lives where they “struggle” to provide for themselves and their families. I have heard many stories of pastors that struggled, didn’t have money in the bank or food in their kitchen, yet somehow, the Lord provided for them. As you look at your life, is God providing for you?

In 1 Kings 17: 2-6 we read, “Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, “Get away from here and turn eastward, and hide by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan. And it will be that you shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.” So he went and did according to the word of the Lord, for he went and stayed by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan. The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he drank from the brook.

The Lord provided for Elijah because Elijah stayed faithful to the Lord and His Word. As you look at your life, is God providing for you? More importantly, are you staying faithful to Him and His Word?

How are Your Roots?

You might not know this, but the California Redwood trees, some of the biggest/tallest known to man could not survive without their roots. I know that you are saying, “all trees need roots”. Yes, you are correct, but although the Redwoods are huge, they have very shallow roots. They survive and are strengthened by their roots growing and tangling up with the roots of other Redwoods. You see, it is their roots that allow them to live and thrive. The same can be said about our spiritual roots.

In Colossians 2:6-7 Paul writes, “As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving. Paul wrote this letter to the Church of Laodicea, the lukewarm church, and warned them that without deep roots in Christ, they could not survive.

As you look at your spiritual walk, how are your roots? Are you rooted in the Lord? Is your faith established and strong? Do you realize that all you have is from the Lord and do you give thanks daily to Him?

The Prayer of a Loved One

There are many things that we can pray for, many things that we should pray for. But, what is the greatest prayer that we can pray daily for our family and friends?

Philippians 1:9-11And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, 10 that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, 11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

We show our love for others not just by words, but also by prayers. May you pray this daily for those in your life.
