An Example to Follow

As we just celebrated Father’s Day, today is a good time for us to reflect on what type of parents that the Lord calls us to be.

In Ephesians 6:1-4 Paul writes, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise: “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.”And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.”

We get very focused on having our children obey us, but do we obey our Father? If we do, will show our children God’s love, God’s kindness, God’s compassion and faithfulness. No, it doesn’t mean that we give our children everything that they want, but it means that we do give them the one thing that they need the most — the Lord.

Walk in Wisdom

Paul taught us yesterday that  we must walk to be the light into the darkness around us. Into our family, friends, co-workers, strangers we meet. It may seem odd, but when people walk in the dark, they might not even realize it. We need to bring light into their lives so that they can see a difference. How do we do that, through love.

Today, Paul reminds us that we must be “smart” in how we do this.

Walk in Wisdom – Ephesians 5:15-21

15 See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, 16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another in the fear of God.

As we walk, as we love, as we shine the Lord’s light, remember to see Him and His wisdom. We can do nothing on our own. May the Lord fill you with wisdom and knowledge so that we may be a blessing to others.

Walk in Light

Yesterday, Paul reminded us that the first step in our journey involves love. We are called to love the Lord, our neighbors and ourselves. Love is a powerful tool and weapon in our journey. It can heal wounds, mend bridges and open eyes to see Jesus.

Today, Paul tells us that as we show the love of God, we will be a light to those in darkness.

Walk in Light – Ephesians 5:8-14

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), 10 finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. 13 But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. 14 Therefore He says: “Awake, you who sleep, Arise from the dead, And Christ will give you light.”

Walk in Love

Christianity is about a “walk”. That is one of the reasons we called our church Journey of Faith. We are all on a journey of growing and changing faith in our Lord. On our journey, we will encounter new things, experience new things, express new things. Paul, in the Book of Ephesians, gives us guidance on how we should be walking. For the rest of the week, we will be exploring Paul’s guidance that he gives us in Ephesians 5.

Walk in Love – Ephesians 5:1-7

Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not be partakers with them.

Show Christ’s love because He has first showed it to us.

What is Christianity to You?

Last night, I was watching a science show with my wife and sons. It was really cool!!! They examine experiments that people have performed to explain why, and sometimes why not, they work. It is fascinating to see how physics, chemistry, biology, etc. work in conjunction with our earth. What I really appreciate about this show is that they have these very intelligent scientists that explain science in very simple terms. You see, keeping it simple makes it easier for everyone else to understand. Have you tried that same approach with the Bible?

In Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 we read, ” 13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man’s all. 14 For God will bring every work into judgment, Including every secret thing, Whether good or evil.”

We often try to “complicate” the Bible by explaining theories, thoughts and ideas. In the process, we loose the people we are trying to reach. The message is simple — God loves us, Jesus died for us, Heaven awaits us.

Hope For Your Trials

Hope for Your Trials – Isaiah 43:1-4

43 But now, thus says the Lord, who created you, O Jacob, And He who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you. For I am the Lord your God, The Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I gave Egypt for your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in your place. Since you were precious in My sight, You have been honored, And I have loved you; Therefore I will give men for you, And people for your life.

Oh, How The Mighty Have Fallen…..

“Oh, how the mighty have fallen”. It is a saying that has been used throughout the ages to describe the scenario when an individual in “on top of the world” one day and then comes “falling to the earth” the next day. To the individual that experiences this (I must confess that I have been this person), it comes as a sudden surprise and shock. Unfortunately, to many around this person, it is no surprise at all.

In Proverbs 28:18 we read, “18 Whoever walks blamelessly will be saved, But he who is perverse in his ways will suddenly fall.”

The moment our world begins to revolve around ourselves and not our Lord, we begin “the fall” from our pedestal. Unfortunately, we won’t realize it until it is too late. As you look at your life today, who is in the center?

What Are You Saying?

What are you saying? No, I don’t mean specifically with your mouth right now. But, what are you saying today about your faith?

I recently witnessed a powerful message by a stranger who said volumes by her actions, not her words. I was in line at a restaurant to order a meal and observed a women in front of me order. The person that took her order told her that he would be back to collect the money later. This worker disappeared to another part of the restaurant never to be seen again. Once her food was ready, the cook handed the order to her and said “here you go”. Immediately, the customer informed the cook that she had not paid yet and handed the worker her money.

In 1 Samuel 24:8-11 we read, “David also arose afterward, went out of the cave, and called out to Saul, saying, “My lord the king!” And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed down. And David said to Saul: “Why do you listen to the words of men who say, ‘Indeed David seeks your harm’? 10 Look, this day your eyes have seen that the Lord delivered you today into my hand in the cave, and someone urged me to kill you. But my eye spared you, and I said, ‘I will not stretch out my hand against my lord, for he is the Lord’s anointed.’ 11 Moreover, my father, see! Yes, see the corner of your robe in my hand! For in that I cut off the corner of your robe, and did not kill you, know and see that there is neither evil nor rebellion in my hand, and I have not sinned against you. Yet you hunt my life to take it.”

David spoke volumes that day of his faith in God when he honored God in his actions. That women I observed also spoke volumes about who she was by her actions. You see, everyday we will either choose to honor God or dis-honor Him by what we say, what we do, where we go. etc.  As you look at your day today, “what are you saying”?

How Do You See Your Wife?

Proverbs 12:4An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, But she who causes shame is like rottenness in his bones.

There is nothing more powerful than a praying wife who loves her Lord, loves her family and raises her family according to God’s word. Never forget that a Godly wife truly is the crown of her husband and her children.

The More You Give, The More You Get

I remember when I was younger, my mom would always have our freezer filled with food. You see, she grew up during the Great Depression when food and money were very hard to come by. As a result, she always made sure that there was enough food in the freezer to feed us during tough times. Not only would she store up for her family, she also gave a lot to others in need. No matter how much she gave and helped others, she was always rich, even though she didn’t have a lot of money.

In Proverbs 11:25 it states, “25 The generous soul will be made rich, And he who waters will also be watered himself.”

As we give to the Lord and to others in need, we are made rich. No, not in money, but in blessings and joy. My mom may have died with very little money in her bank account, but she died as one of the richest persons I have ever known.  Make sure that you live each day to be rich, regardless of how much you have in your bank account.
