I was recently studying 1 John and I was struck by a command that John reiterates multiple times throughout the book – “he who hates his brother”.
Specifically, it is first stated in 1 John 2:9-11 “9 He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now. 10 He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him. 11 But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.”
It is easy to assume that John is talking about blood relatives, but I believe that His caution applies to a much broader definition – those that are brothers in Christ. How many times we do state we “love God”, yet we often speak unkind words about a fellow brother in Christ? How often do we say we “love Jesus” but do damage to a brother with our words?
Let John’s caution be a daily reminder to us all that if we truly love God, then our words and actions towards our brothers will reflect our love for Him.
I pray for blessings today for you on your Journey!
