God Helps Those Who Seek Him

As part of my duties as a volunteer chaplain for a local police department, I was recently called to a home where a young lady had died in her sleep. As you can imagine, her family was distraught. She had just finished law school, just passed the Bar exam, but died before she was able to practice law. As I say with the mom, she kept asking me, “how am I supposed to go on?” I was reminded of this as I was reading today.

The first verse of Psalm 121 tells us, “121 I will lift up my eyes to the hills—From whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.”

As I sat with her, as I listened to her, I asked her one simple question — “do you believe in God?” I already knew the question from our conversation, but I asked it anyway. Her answer was a very quick and confident, “yes”. I reminded her that she would get through this difficult situation not by her own strength and might, but by the comfort and care of the Lord. Where does our help come from, “my help comes from the Lord”.

Let Vengance Not Be Mine

There have been times in my life when I have been so upset with someone that all I could think of was getting “revenge” on them. Whatever the hurt was, I wanted to make sure they felt the same. Thankfully, as the Lord has led me, I have learned that it is not up to me.

In 1 Samuel 24:12 King Saul tells David, “12 Let the Lord judge between you and me, and let the Lord avenge me on you. But my hand shall not be against you.

Saul had realized that David had spared his life and thus, David was more righteous than he. Saul realized that David’s actions had honored the Lord when Saul had not. Just like Saul, “let the Lord judge between you and me”. It is not up to us to judge. It is up to us to love.

Stay With Me

I remember when our boys were younger, we always wanted them to be close to us. That way, we could keep them safe, protect them, and make sure nobody caused them any harm. As Christians, we must seek that same covering in our own lives, regardless of how old we are.

In 1 Samuel 22:23 David commanded Abiathar, “ 23 Stay with me; do not fear. For he who seeks my life seeks your life, but with me you shall be safe.”

Remember, the same world that sought Jesus’ life is after us today. The only we will be safe and protected is to stay with Jesus and “do not fear”. Is Jesus is for us, who can be against us?

Who Is As Faithful?

When it comes to describing characteristics of people, there is one word that stands out to many — “faithful”. We appreciate and value when one we know is faithful. We value the fact that people will stay loyal and dependable to us no matter what.

In 1 Samuel 22:14 we read, “14 So Ahimelech answered the king and said, “And who among all your servants is as faithful as David, who is the king’s son-in-law, who goes at your bidding, and is honorable in your house?

Perhaps the best word to describe David in his early years is “faithful”. Regardless of what Saul and others attempted to do to him, including kill him, he remained faithful. No, not to those that threatened him, but to God. Remember David. Regardless of what people may do to you or say about you we are commanded to remain “as faithful as David”.

There Is No Common Bread

There is something special about having a sandwich on a great piece of bread or roll. The texture and taste of the bread alone make the sandwich so much better. You always know when you are eating a quality bread and when you are not. Along the same lines, you always know when bread is holy and when bread is not holy.

1 Samuel 21:4 states, “And the priest answered David and said, “There is no common bread on hand; but there is holy bread, if the young men have at least kept themselves from women.”

Jesus is our bread of life. He is not common bread, but “is holy bread”. He is not like any other. He is not just live “everyone else”. He is special. He is unique. His is Holy.

It is None of Your Business!

“It is none of your business!” How often have we said it? How often have we heard it? It is a polite way of letting people know to not get involved in something we are dealing with. Unfortunately, we also take this approach when we choose not to get involved in matters important to the Lord.

In 1 Samuel 21:2 tells us, “So David said to Ahimelech the priest, “The king has ordered me on some business, and said to me, ‘Do not let anyone know anything about the business on which I send you, or what I have commanded you.’ And I have directed my young men to such and such a place.”

We must remember that the Lord has placed us here on earth and “The king has ordered me on some business”. God has given you a specific purpose and mission. He has given you the talents and the skills you need. The question is, will you make the Lord’s mission your business?

The Slaying of 10,000

I think from time-to-time we get thoughts that run through our mind that we are not “worthy” enough to do great things for the Lord. We always assume that the most effective people are those on TV, on the radio or in other positions of great prominence or recognition. Unfortunately, too often, I think that we are wrong.

1 Samuel 18:7 tells us, “So the women sang as they danced, and said: ‘Saul has slain his thousands, And David his ten thousands.’”

King Saul was credited by his people of slaying “thousands”, while David, a mere servant of Saul was credited with slaying “ten thousands”. We do not need to be famous, popular or even in positions of prominence to be effective for the Lord, we just need to be willing and available. My prayer for you today is that you will step out in faith, be filled with the Spirit and go touch “ten thousands” for the Kingdom of God.

I Love You Just the Way You Are

There is an old song by Billy Joel that says, “don’t go changin to try and please me”. The chorus of the song ends with “I love you just the way you are”.The song is about a man who is in love with a woman “just the way she is”. Do you know who loves you “just the way you are”?

In Psalms 139:14  we are told, “14 I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well.”

The Bible tells us that we are God’s living temple. Think about that. If you consider how much thought, planning, care and time God put into designing the temples we read of in the Old Testament, how much more time, planning, thought and care did He put into you? No, you are not too tall, too short, too thin, weight too much, have the wrong color hair or eyes. God made you exactly how He wanted you so He could dwell in you.

The Presence of the Lord be With You

It is my prayer for me, my family, my church family and all of you that each day we will sense and feel the Lord’s presence in a strong and powerful way. It is such a great feeling knowing that the Lord is with us, guiding us, encouraging us and strengthening us.

Judges 18:6 reminds us, “And the priest said to them, “Go in peace. The presence of the Lord be with you on your way.”

Remember, as we walk with the Lord, the Lord walks with us. Because of that, I pray that today you have peace knowing that “the Lord be with you on your way”. Remember, if God is for us, who can be against us?

Who Is Your King?

Whether or not we want to admit it, we all follow someone. Whomever that person is that we follow will determine and dictate who we are. We might not realize it, but people have a significant influence on us.

In Judges 17:6 it says, “In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

Israel had not king, so “everyone did what was right in his own eyes”. As you look at your life, “who is your king”? Is it God, or is it someone/something else? Do you look to the Bible to determine who you are, or is the world shaping your thoughts and beliefs? Remember, Israel got themselves into trouble because “there was no king”. Make sure the King of King and Lord of Lord reigns sovereign in your life.
