Ecclesiastes 9:12 – 12 For man also does not know his time: Like fish taken in a cruel net, Like birds caught in a snare, So the sons of men are snared in an evil time, When it falls suddenly upon them.
One of my responsibilities I had when I worked in an emergency room was to take the deceased to the morgue. As part of that process, I would have to wrap the body in a sheet. The last portion of the sheet to be taped closed was the face. As you can imagine, I have seen many of those faces during my fours years of working there. While there were many different faces, I was always taken back by one particular look — the look of surprise.
Ecclesiastes 9 is a good warning that “man also does not know his time”. In fact, that is why so many faces had the look of surprise on them; they had no idea what was about to happen. In fact, Jesus reiterated that same point several times in the New Testament. If we truly do not know our time, shouldn’t we live our lives now so that we will not have to be surprised then? Shouldn’t we be prepared so that when the Lord calls us home, it will be a time of celebration, not a time of shock? May you live your life today in such a way that you will not worry about when your time will be up.
